Change your timer settings

I want to …

… set the mode, the durations, the sound, and the screen behavior of my timer in one place.

Before you start

  • Works on every plan (Free, Pro, Ultra) and for every role (Owner, Admin, Member).
  • The settings are yours alone. They apply on every board and in every workspace, and they sync across your devices. Teammates keep their own.
  • Changes save on their own. There is no save button.

Here's how

  1. Open Timer settings. There are three ways:
    • In Focus, tap the line under the clock. It shows mode, duration, and sound, for example Fixed · 25 Min · Mystery. Or tap the clock digits. Both show the tooltip Timer settings.
    • In the focus bar (phone) or in the timer box at the top right of the board header (wide screen), long-press or right-click the clock.
    • Or tap that clock, then the slider icon (Timer settings) next to plus.
  2. The sheet slides up from the bottom. On a wide screen, timing sits on the left, sound and switches on the right.
  3. Choose the mode: Fixed or Pomodoro.
  4. Set the duration. Minus and plus change it by one minute. Hold them to keep counting; after a moment they jump to the next multiple of five. The mouse wheel works too. Tap the number to type the minutes, then confirm with Done. Any value from 1 to 180 minutes works.
  5. Or tap a preset below: 15, 25, 45, or 60 in Fixed, 25/5 or 50/10 (work/break) in Pomodoro.
  6. In Pomodoro you set Work and Break, and also:
    • Long break: the length of the long break.
    • Long break after: Off, or 1 to 12 rounds, for example 4 rounds. Every n-th break is then a long one.
    • Start next phase automatically: when on, the next phase runs right away. When off, it waits paused until you press play.
  7. Under Timer sound, tap a chip: Mystery, Bell, Big Gong, Small Gong, Glass, Hey, Wood, or Silent. Each tap selects the sound and plays it once.
  8. Keep screen awake keeps the display on while the Focus tab is open.
  9. Vibrate at the end makes the phone vibrate when a session or a phase ends. The switch shows only in the iPhone and Android apps.
  10. Swipe the sheet down or tap outside it to close it.

The result

The timer uses your settings on every board and on every device you sign in on. The line under the clock shows the current mode, duration, and sound.

Common questions

What happens if I switch the mode while the timer runs?

Zeitlicht asks Switch mode? with This ends the current round. Switch ends the run and resets the timer in the new mode. Cancel keeps everything as it was.

Does a new duration change the run in progress?

Yes, if the run uses the same mode, also while it is paused. In Pomodoro the change applies to the phase that is running. A new length for another phase waits until that phase comes up.

Which keys work in the Focus tab?

With a keyboard: Space starts, pauses, and resumes. R resets. S skips the current Pomodoro phase. V changes the view. The up and down arrows change the current length by one minute, with Shift by five. On a wide screen, the bottom line of the view lists the most common ones.

Why did my timer start with other values than 25 minutes?

Until you change the mode or a duration yourself for the first time, the timer uses the values the open board had saved earlier. After your first change, your own settings apply everywhere.

What are the defaults?

Fixed with 25 minutes. For Pomodoro: 25 minutes Work, 5 minutes Break, and a 15-minute Long break after 4 rounds, with the next phase starting automatically. Sound Mystery, screen kept awake, vibration on.
